Locally...
Gayle:
The Village of Gayle, originally a Celtic settlement, is divided
by Duerley Beck and boasts two beautiful waterfalls - Gayle Force and
upstream Aisgill Force. Downstream the sawmill, built in 1783, originally
a cotton mill, and later a woolen mill & saw mill. Duerley Beck
flows on past the Wensleydale
Creamery, famous for its cheese, then on to Hawes
and the River Ure.
Hawes:
At the head of the dale it bears the title of the capital of Wensleydale.
Its market charter was granted in 1699 by William III. It continues
to be the major livestock centre and claims to be the second highest
market town in England. Hawes today is a prosperous tourist centre for
the Yorkshire Dales and owes much of its success to its unrivaled central
position in the Dales.
There's something for everyone in this beautiful part of the Yorkshire
Dales...whatever the weather!
