About Us...
Rookhurst Country House is full of contrasts. The high
ceilinged Victorian section, built about 1870 in the Gothic style, includes
the Dining Room, the Drawing Room and two of our five en-suite bedrooms.
The other three bedrooms are low-ceilinged rooms with exposed timbers
in the 17th/18th century farmhouse.
The large rooms with high ceilings and grand church-like windows are
typical of the Gothic style and all of the Victorian fabric of the house
remains intact. The inscriptions on the tiled Entrance Hall and on some
of the bedroom fireplaces are typically moralistic Victorian sentiment.
There is a Whaley Coat of Arms over the front entrance and Portrait
Heads adorn the outside of the Drawing Room window.
The farmhouse part of the house has undergone a number of changes since
the 17th century, but still retains much of its traditional character
- thick stone walls of local stone, small mullioned windows, lots of
exposed timber and a roof of very large stone slabs.
After your day exploring the Yorkshire Dales, relax in a bath and then
join us in the Drawing Room before dinner (served at 7:30pm) for an
aperitif. An open fire adds to the atmosphere as guests recall their
exploits of the day.
Judith specializes in traditional home-cooked English dishes, made
with fresh mostly locally produced ingredients and she bakes the bread
for Breakfast. Her homemade specialties will be hard to surpass anywhere
in the Dales. Approximately half the items on our Wine List come from smaller French
vineyards and the balance includes examples from Australia, Spain, North
& South America, New Zealand and Lebanon.
We cater for both Bed & Breakfast (B&B) as well as Dinner,
Bed & Breakfast (D,B&B) and our en-suite rooms are relaxing
and comfortable.
Spend some time with us and enjoy what Rookhurst and the Wensleydale
area have to offer - peace and relaxation. Perfect!
